A different conversation about family separation
Family separation is usually presented as a legal problem.
Family.Reimagined believes it is first and foremost a major human transition—affecting children, relationships, homes, finances, emotional wellbeing, identity and the future of the family.
Founder Alexandra “Alex” Gray is available for interviews, podcasts, articles, panels and speaking opportunities about the lived experience of separation and how Australia could support families differently.
Topics Alex can discuss
Why separation should be treated as a family transition—not led by a legal process
The gaps families experience immediately after separation
The emotional, parenting, financial and workplace effects of separation
How adversarial processes can increase conflict, cost and delay
Post-relationship abuse, coercive behaviour and safety after separation
Why people of all genders fear being disadvantaged by their former partner
The key roles that lack of information, fears, in/ability to accept change, in/ability to compromise play all the way to the Family Court room and why Family.Reimagined addresses these early on
Why families need coordinated support from the beginning
The experience of self-represented people in Australian family law
Making separation support safer, faster, fairer and more affordable
The role employers can play in supporting separating employees
Family.Reimagined’s program and social-enterprise model
What 200 Australians told us about their separation experiences
What our research found
In July 2026, Family.Reimagined conducted an exploratory survey of 200 people with lived experience of separation.
Among the findings:
Respondents rated their overall separation experience just 2.24 out of 10.
53% placed their experience at the “war zone” end of the scale.
62% said they had little or no understanding of the separation process beforehand.
48% said they had to coordinate the process themselves.
Only 8% said they coordinated the separation together.
95% of respondents had children.
Life after separation received an average rating of 5.98 out of 10.
The research identified recurring concerns about cost, delay, safety, poor communication, fragmented services and the absence of early guidance.
The survey was exploratory and involved a self-selected sample. It does not claim to represent every separating family, but it provides valuable insight into the experiences and concerns of participating Australians.
About Alexandra Gray
Alex is the founder of Family.Reimagined, an Australian social enterprise creating a more coordinated, child-focused and human way for families to move from one household to two.
Her perspective comes from lived and professional experience. Alex has experienced separation as both a child and a parent, including post-relationship abuse, difficult experiences with solicitors and self-representation in family-law proceedings.
For more than three years, she has also helped administer the Self Represented in Family Law Australia Facebook community, which has grown to more than 4,200 members. This has given her direct insight into the confusion, fear, cost and isolation experienced by people trying to navigate family separation.
Alex also brings more than 18 years’ experience in project delivery, business improvement and stakeholder engagement, and other experience in natural therapies and coaching.
She founded Family.Reimagined in July 2026 after recognising that separating families were expected to coordinate complex emotional, parenting, financial and legal decisions at one of the most difficult times in their lives—with no single person responsible for guiding the whole transition.
The “village” that she needed simply wasn’t there. Her response was to begin building the village she wished her own family had been able to access.
About Family.Reimagined
Family.Reimagined helps families move from one household to two with one coordinated team and a clear family roadmap.
Depending on the family’s needs, support may include family-transition coordination, parenting and family redesign, financial guidance, individual wellbeing support, safety oversight and separate independent legal advice for each adult.
The objective is to complete the human, parenting, financial and practical work before legal processes are allowed to drive the separation.
Family.Reimagined is beginning with a pilot group of Australian families so that the model can be tested, measured and improved using real participant feedback.
Families don’t end. They transition.
