Australia has a legal process for separation.
But it has never designed a transition process centred on the family’s needs.
Every year, tens of thousands of Australian families experience one of life's biggest transitions.
Yet after making the difficult decision to separate, individuals are expected to navigate housing, finances, co-parenting, legal processes, emotional wellbeing and practical life changes completely on their own.
For some, fear, powerlessness, sadness and uncertainty about the next chapter quickly take hold. Without coordinated support and a sense of safety, these emotions can contribute to unnecessary conflict, poor decision making and harmful patterns of post-separation abuse.
Not because most people set out to hurt each other.
But because no coordinated family transition process exists to guide the whole family safely through the transition from day one and support them as they establish two healthy households.
Family. Reimagined exists to change that.
A new way of supporting families through separation — providing one coordinated team, one clear roadmap and one family-centred transition process designed around the unique needs of every family.
Research into Australia’s experience of Separation & Divorce
Coming soon in August 2026 …
We're currently analysing the 200 responses to Australia's Family Separation Experience Survey.
This report aims to provide valuable insights into how Australians experience separation — including the emotional, financial, parenting and practical challenges they face, the factors that contribute to conflict, and what families say would have helped them most during the transition.
Our goal is to use this evidence to inform better support, improve outcomes for families, and help shape the future of Family. Reimagined.
Together, we can build a better way to support Australian families through separation.
What does separation actually cost?
Most families underestimate the true cost of separation.
The cost is not only financial. Separation can involve grief, uncertainty, fear, anger, loneliness and significant stress. It can affect mental health, relationships, parenting, housing, employment and children's wellbeing.
At the very time families need the greatest support, many find themselves trying to navigate an unclear process with no roadmap, no support and no central source of guidance.
Parents are often left to coordinate rehoming, lawyers, accountants, counsellors, support services and government agencies independently, while simultaneously making some of the most important decisions of their lives.
Legal Costs Add Up Quickly
Family lawyers commonly charge between $400 and $750+ GST per hour.
Many families engage two lawyers at the beginning of separation, often before they have gathered financial information, explored parenting options or identified what outcomes they are actually seeking.
Examples include:
Two lawyers attending a one-hour meeting: $800-$1,500+ GST
Ten hours of legal work per parent: $8,000-$15,000+ GST
Twenty-five hours of legal work per parent: $20,000-$37,500+ GST
Going to the federal Family Law court can cost tens of thousands, and sometimes hundreds of thousands, of dollars
Many of these costs arise from managing conflict, uncertainty, communication difficulties and information gathering rather than solving the underlying issues facing the family.
The Hidden Costs
Families frequently experience:
Delayed decisions
Ongoing conflict
Emotional distress
Financial stress
Parenting disputes
Housing uncertainty
Reduced workplace productivity
Mental health challenges
Increased pressure on children
Long-term deterioration in co-parenting relationships
These impacts can continue for years after formal separation.
A Different Approach
We believe families deserve a clearer, kinder, safer and more supportive pathway. And one day, we hope that this will be provided by the Australian government to all our precious families when going through this major life shift.
Our model focuses on creating clarity early, supporting the wellbeing of the whole family and helping parents make informed decisions before unnecessary conflict and legal costs escalate.
We help families gather information, understand their options, explore parenting arrangements, identify areas of agreement and work through areas of difference with the support of a coordinated professional team.
Lawyers remain an important part of the process, but they are engaged only with the intention to formalise the separation and/or divorce once much of the groundwork has been completed. This often allows legal advice to be more focused, more effective and less about putting one parent against the other parent.
An Investment In Your Family's Future
Our goal is not simply to help families separate.
Our goal is to help families create a healthy foundation for the next chapter of their lives.
The cost of getting separation wrong can last for years and decades.
The benefits of getting it right can last a lifetime. We are here for you.
Our Services
Family Transition Program
Separation is one of life's biggest transitions. Yet most families are expected to navigate parenting decisions, finances, housing, legal processes, emotional wellbeing and the needs of their children with little support and no clear process.
The Family Transition Program was created to change that.
We believe you deserve better. A clearer, easier and coordinated approach that protects everyone in the family.
Co-Parenting Coordination
Not every family needs support throughout the entire separation process.
Some families have already separated, finalised parenting arrangements or completed legal processes, but continue to experience ongoing conflict, communication difficulties or concerns about coercive, intimidating or harmful behaviour.
Intermediary Co-Parenting Coordination provides a structured layer of professional support between parents.
Join Us in Creating a Better Way
We are building a new model for family separation—one that replaces uncertainty with clarity, conflict with collaboration, and fragmented services with coordinated support. This is an opportunity to help shape a service that could transform the way Australian families experience one of life's most significant transitions.
Become an Advisory Panel member
The Advisory Panel will help guide the development of our pilot program, ensuring it reflects the needs of real families while drawing on the expertise of professionals from a wide range of disciplines.
The panel will provide strategic advice, challenge our thinking, identify opportunities for improvement and help ensure the service remains child-focused, practical, equitable and evidence-informed. Their role is not to govern the organisation, but to help shape and continually improve the model as we learn from our pilot families.
We are seeking respected professionals and leaders with expertise in areas including accounting and financial planning, psychology, counselling, social work, domestic and family violence, men's and women's wellbeing, parenting, child development, legal services, education, healthcare, technology, cybersecurity, privacy, government policy, insurance, social enterprise and business.
Importantly, our Advisory Panel will also include people with lived experience of separation. Their perspectives are essential to ensuring that every aspect of Family Reimagined reflects the realities faced by Australian families today.
This is only the beginning. As our pilot progresses, we expect our knowledge, partnerships and services to grow.
If you believe your experience could help shape the future of family separation in Australia, we'd love to hear from you.

Become One of Our First Pilot Families
We are seeking five families who are currently navigating separation and would like to participate in our pilot program. As one of our founding families, you will receive personalised support, guidance and access to our developing family transition framework, while helping us shape a service designed to support thousands of families in the future.
Your feedback, experiences and ideas will directly influence how this service evolves. Together, we can create a more supportive, transparent and child-focused approach to family separation.
We also aim to use your feedback and our findings to obtain government and business funding in order to make the service more affordable and/or free!
We would really appreciate your contribution.
Families who are willing and able to contribute the pilot program fee of $15,000 ($7,500 per parent) will help us bring this much-needed service to life sooner.
If self-funding is not an option for your family, please register your interest anyway. We are actively investigating a range of funding and subsidy options and would love to keep you informed as these opportunities become available.
Be part of creating a better future for families.
Become a Funding Hero for Families
Help Us Protect Families During One of Life's Most Difficult Transitions
We are currently seeking funding partners, sponsors, investors, philanthropic organisations, health funds, superannuation funds, government agencies and community organisations who share our vision. We have various ideas for solutions that could fund this long term.
Together, we can help families transition safely, protect vulnerable family members and create healthier futures for parents, children and future generations.
Our principles guide every conversation, decision and service we provide, ensuring families are supported with clarity, compassion and practical expertise throughout separation, transition and beyond.
Our Principles
Every Family Is Unique
No two families are the same. Solutions should reflect each family's circumstances, values, strengths, challenges and goals rather than forcing them into a standard process.
Clarity Creates Confidence
Families deserve to understand the process, their options and what happens next. Clear information reduces fear, uncertainty and unnecessary conflict.
Transparency Builds Trust
Open communication, documented decisions and shared information create accountability, reduce misunderstandings and support better outcomes for everyone involved.
Prevention Is Better Than Intervention
Many family challenges can be prevented through early support, education and timely intervention before problems escalate into crises.
Children Come First
Children's wellbeing, safety, development and long-term relationships remain at the centre of decision-making throughout separation and beyond.
